AGUSTAWESTLAND SIGNS US COAST GUARD CONTRACT EXTENSION

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica and GKN Company, is pleased to announce that it has inked a contract for a five year extension to their U.S. Coast Guard HITRON (Helicopter Interdiction Tactical SquadRON) programme. HITRON is planned to be incorporated into Deepwater operations when the latter is formalized.

"We might actually be the first Deepwater contract, said AgustaWestland Inc's President, Steve Moss. "We signed with Lockheed Martin, not with the USCG directly. Lockheed Martin is the service's contractor on the Deepwater integration contract. Under the new deal, AgustaWestland will lease another two MH-68A helicopters, dedicated versions of the twin-engine A109 Power, in addition to the eight already operating with the drug busting squadron. MH-68As usually deploy from Coast Guard cutters and interdict fast-moving boats carrying illegal narcotics. A number of successful operations have already taken place in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

In 2000, AgustaWestland was awarded a contract by the USCG for eight A109 Powers for the USCG's HITRON TEN programme. AgustaWestland secured the contract in the face of vigorous competition with other leading companies. Final aircraft completion and delivery will be supplied by Agusta Aerospace Corporation, AgustaWestland's wholly owned U.S. subsidiary in Philadelphia, USA, which is also responsible for HITRON's support.

The Deepwater programme also envisages the AB139 helicopter as its future Vertical take-off and landing Recovery and Surveillance (VRS) solution. The AB139 has been selected by Integrated Coast Guard Systems (ICGS), a joint venture established by Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, as part of their proposed aviation platform solution.
