Smiths Detection awarded contract to protect Asian Games with chemical threat detection and analysis equipment

SMITHS Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announces it has received a contract to supply the Qatar Government with chemical detection equipment to help protect the Asian Games in Doha this year. The order includes the Lightweight Chemical Detector and HazmatID used for the identification of unknown substances.

The new products will supplement Smiths Detection equipment including CAM and GID-3 chemical agent detectors, which are already in use with the Qatar Defence Forces.

The contract signing was the result of close co-operation between Smiths Detection and the Government of the State of Qatar over contingency plans for the detection of chemical agent threats at the Games

Training and operational assistance will be provided by Smiths Detection as part of the contract.

The Doha Asian Games, starting on December 1, will be the latest in a long line of major sports events which have used Smiths Detection equipment to assist with security and protection against chemical and biological attack. Most recently, Smiths Detection x-ray systems and chemical detection equipment were used extensively in safeguarding competitors, venues and visitors at the Athens Olympic Games.
