Australian Market Success For the AW139
The AW139 has achieved significant success in Australia, winning orders in the Search and Rescue (SAR) and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) markets. The Queensland Government and CHC, in New South Wales, will each operate three AW139s helping to provide improved emergency medical and rescue services to the communities they serve, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Like Australia, the AW139 has become the medium twin engine helicopter of choice elsewhere in the world with sales now exceeding 220. Recent EMS/SAR customers include the State Spanish Marine Safety Agency (Sasemar) who choose the AW139 to perform SAR and water pollution detection missions and the Japanese Coast Guard who selected the AW139 as the best helicopter capable of carrying out their demanding maritime SAR and patrol missions, which include ship-based operations.
Other SAR/EMS customers located in Namibia, Nigeria, Italy, United Kingdom, UAE, Oman, Estonia and the United States are now operating the AW139 or have placed contracts for aircraft. The aircraft, operated by the Italian company Airgreen, was used for EMS applications during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin. The ease in which the AW139 can be converted between fire fighting, EMS and SAR roles recently convinced the Los Angeles City Fire Department, who earlier this month signed a contract for two aircraft. The AW139 will ensure the LAFD is at the forefront of "fire service� aircraft operations.
The AW139 is the only new generation medium twin-turbine helicopter on the market today. It is designed with inherent multi-role capability and is the only helicopter in its class to meet the latest safety certification standards. The AW139 has the largest unobstructed cabin in its class providing maximum role flexibility and an ideal choice for EMS and SAR applications. The 8.0 m3 cabin combined with a flat floor and 1.42 m high ceiling allows medical attendants easy access to casualties and crew to easily manoeuvre in the cabin. In the EMS configuration two or four litters can be fitted and if the large cabin accessible baggage area is utilised for equipment the litter capacity can be increased to six.
The high 165 knot maximum cruise speed allows the AW139 to reach survivors and casualties quickly and importantly has outstanding Cat "Aâ€? performance, even in hot and high conditions, providing increased safety. Its Pratt & Whitney turbines together with a state-of-the-art 5-bladed main rotor make the AW139 the fastest helicopter in its class, thanks to an outstanding power to weight ratio. In the cockpit the pilots have the Honeywell Primus Epic® fully integrated avionics suite with large area LCD displays. The 4-axis digital autopilot with auto hover, full digital electronic engine control and built in system redundancy lowers the pilot workload so crew can concentrate on the mission. High main and tail rotor ground clearance provides added safety for crew, passengers and maintenance teams whilst on the ground. Operational equipment can include a full medical support unit, external rescue hoist, cargo hook, wire strike protection, search/weather radar, FLIR/LLTV system, NVG compatible cockpit, and a searchlight.
