AgustaWestland Continues to Grow in Japan with Police sale
AgustaWestland has been awarded a further contract by the Japan National Police Agency to supply five AW109 Power law enforcement helicopters as part of an on-going program to modernise the Police helicopter fleet. This contract follows on from ones for three helicopters in both 2003 and 2005 for operation by local Police agencies, while four additional AW109 Powers were ordered in 2006 by the Japan National Police Agency. Four AW109 Powers have been delivered to Japanese Police agencies so far this year.
Renzo Lunardi, Commercial Business Unit Director, AgustaWestland said: �This repeat order demonstrates the Police's satisfaction with the aircraft, its cost effectiveness and their confidence in the product support infrastructure in Japan. This order will bring the total number of AW109 helicopters ordered by the Japanese Police to sixteen and highlights our growing share of the important Japanese helicopter market.�
The AW109 Power has rapidly become the aircraft of choice in the light-twin segment in Japan. The aircraft ensures the highest performance in its class, offering the highest cruise speed, large payload, exceptional handling qualities, greater fuel efficiency and the highest safety levels. These benefits translate into reduced operating costs, increased safety and reduced fatigue and workload for pilots and crew, and hence more effective operations. In addition to the Japanese law enforcement market, the AW109 Power is achieving growing success in the Emergency Medical Services, news gathering and passenger transport markets in Japan.
Other AgustaWestland helicopter types being operated by Japanese agencies include examples of the AW139 and AW101 helicopters operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. In March 2007, the first Kawasaki manufactured MCH-101 Airborne Mine Counter-Measures helicopter, a variant of AgustaWestland's AW101, was delivered to the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF), bringing the number of helicopters in service with the JMSDF to two. In October 2006 the Japanese Coast Guard ordered three AW139 helicopters for maritime Search and Rescue operations, as the initial phase of a replacement program for up to 24 helicopters.
