Amphibious Ships partnership: highest capability/lowest risk

The Tenix/Navantia partnership bidding for the $2b

Australian Amphibious Ships project said today its ship design and build strategy provide the lowest risk and highest capability option for Australia.

Navantia Chairman and CEO Juan Pedro Gómez Jaen and Tenix Group Chairman Paul Salteri issued a joint statement today.

Senor Gómez arrived in Australia on Monday for a five-day visit, as evaluation of the Amphibious Ships bids by the Defence Materiel Organisation continues.

"Navantia's fourth-generation amphibious ship design provides Australia with the greatest capability, the two chairmen said.

"At the same time, the build strategy we have developed incorporates an appropriate balance between construction in Spain and Australia, providing an optimised low-risk solution for on-time delivery.

"It incorporates the most efficient solutions, derived from previous amphibious programs.

"We are both very pleased with the continued strengthening of the links between the Tenix and Navantia teams working on the bid and planning for production, they said.

"Tenix and Navantia are combining their capabilities and commitment to this project, and our discussions this week have confirmed that the Tenix/Navantia team is achieving the high standards we have set for it.

"Construction of the Spanish Navy's amphibious ship - the design basis for the Australian bid - is well under way.

"Tenix and Navantia have both established records for on-time, on-budget delivery of major shipbuilding projects.

"We have also identified a strong Australian industrial base ready and keen to play a major role in the project and help support the ships throughout their service life, Mr Salteri and Senor Gómez said.

"This provides significant potential for skilled long-term jobs for Australians.
