DEFENCELL Sponsor the IQPC Combat Engineering Conference.

J & S Franklin, manufacturers of the DefenCell Vehicle Barrier System, are for the first time sponsoring the IQPC, 2nd Annual Combat Engineering Conference to be held at The Cafe Royal, in London, England, from the 30th to 31st October, 2008.

The theme of this year's conference is the "Advancing combat engineering issues and requirements to meet the demands of the contemporary operating environment." This is an area in which J & S Franklin has a great deal of experience in supporting operational forces and a number of recent projects have shown the versatility of DefenCell and its advantages in the Expeditionary arena.

In September DefenCell was supplied to a NATO Army for their pre-deployment training in Jamaica. It was used to build a CQB training house, 30 x 25m in size with 3.5m high walls, using sand fill and local labour. Minimal use was made of available plant and the structure was built mostly by hand using buckets and shovels. The DefenCell was delivered on only 8 standard shipping pallets and was hand carried onto site.

More recently the US Forces have ordered DefenCell to use as a deployable 'bullet trap' for installation behind 'pop-up' training targets in live fire training. The light weight of the DT1 units allowed them to be quickly and easily filled in situ, wherever the targets were located.

The DT1 has also undergone successful tests with the UK forces for EMOE training. Again the light-weight allows the wall sections to be hand carried to remote training locations and filled on site. A breaching charge is detonated in contact with the wall and a realistic 'gap' is created that training soldiers can safely move through. The remaining parts of the wall can be easily removed and a new wall quickly built for subsequent exercises.

In all three of these examples the non-metallic construction of DefenCell ensures there is no risk from ricochets or secondary shrapnel in close quarter training operations.

DefenCell is currently in service in Afghanistan, where it is protecting two highly vulnerable ammunition supply points in two separate locations at Camp Bastion in Helmand province and Kandahar Airport, and continues to meet the exacting requirements of operational troop and equipment protection in a hostile environment.

The DefenCell System has been developed to enable force protection walls to be rapidly built, on a small ground footprint, under operational conditions. Successive layers of DefenCell are built to the desired height.

Walls of any thickness or length can be produced to suit ballistic and vehicle impact requirements. A wide range of locally available fill materials can be used including sand, aggregates and earth, easily compacted to give DefenCell structural strength and integrity.

DefenCell is made from strong, durable and internationally proven geotextile material of cellular design, which provides strength with versatility.
