Smiths Detection Expands Manufacturing Facility In Maryland

$3.5 million investment to stimulate growth for Edgewood site

Smiths Detection has inaugurated a $3.5 million expansion of its military facility in Edgewood, Maryland, following a number of Department of Defense (DoD) contract wins over the past two years.

Production and office space will be increased from 87,000 to 130,000 square feet over the next six to eight months.

Mal Maginnis, President, Smiths Detection—Global Military and Emergency Responders, said, "This expansion will help meet increased demand from recent contracts such as the Chemical Biological Protective Shelter (CBPS) and Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) programs. As well as creating jobs, it will also give us a strong position for future growth."

Yesterday, local U.S. Maryland Senator, Barbara A. Mikulski, a guest of honor at Monday's formal expansion ceremony, said: "I am proud to be at this expansion ceremony today. The technology Smiths Detection builds here helps protect our brave men and women in uniform and keep Americans safe from silent but deadly threats. As a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I will continue to fight for funds to keep Americans safe and Maryland's economy strong.

Smiths Detection has an outstanding record of working with the DoD on various contracts including producing advanced chemical detection units for programs such as Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD), Automatic Chemical Agent Detector Alarm (ACADA) and Improved Chemical Agent Monitor (ICAM).

The company also has supported the DoD in meteorological programs for 50 years including the recent Meteorological Measuring Set Profiler Program (MMS-P). Smiths Detection Military has also recently won a protective shelter (CBPS) award.
